It is made out of oak and has the Mother Mary holding her son Jesus in the shadow box. The figures are made out of plaster. The colors are still very vibrant. Prayer boxes were very popular among the Catholics in the late 1800's to the early 1900's. When someone in their family turned deathly ill, A priest would come over to the home, open the box.
Place the portable little candelabra's inside the side hinged candle holders on the box, place candles, light and pray. The little bottle would always be full of holy water so the sick could be blessed and anointed with the holy water.The little silver dish and spoon was to administer communion. These boxes are getting scarcer and scarcer and very hard to find in this condition. The box measures: 23" tall, 13 1/2" wide and 4 in depth.
When the box is opened, you will see the word: VIATICUM which means the Eucharist given to someone nearing the end of their life. Inside the box are stored the following.
2 portable metal candelabras that fit into each side of the prayer box for candles. Each measure 3" wide and 3 1/2" tall. A small black crucifix - measures 6" tall, 3" wide. A box of absorbent cotton (still has original cotton inside) - box measures 3" x 2" x 1. Glass bottle with one side embossed.The other side of the bottle has a beautiful cross embossed. Bottle measures: 2 3/4" wide, 3" tall and 1 thick. A small round silver plate with the initials IHS which is a monogram or symbol meaning Jesus. A silver spoon with a cross on the handle. (We believe these pieces are silver plate).
